Select a model based on task type, risk, speed, privacy, and available context.

The lesson

Simple formatting, summarisation, and brainstorming often work on cheaper models. Architecture, debugging, legal-like risk, and complex code need stronger models.

Local models are attractive for private work. Cloud frontier models are attractive for difficult reasoning.

The expert habit is to match model strength to business risk instead of always choosing the newest model.
