What is a prompt manager?
A prompt manager is where your prompts live between conversations. Instead of scrolling back through old chats or copying prompts out of a notes file, you keep them in one place: named, organized, reusable. A good prompt manager does three jobs — it stores your prompts in a searchable library, it gives you templates so recurring prompts start from a proven structure, and it helps you improve a prompt before you paste it into an AI model.
That last job is where most prompt tools stop short. They store prompts; they don't help you write them. A prompt editor is about the text in front of you: structure it, score it, format it for the IDE or model you're targeting. A prompt manager is about the collection: keep every prompt you've ever written, organize it, and reuse it next week. Most tools do one or the other. Cloud prompt libraries manage but don't coach; bare editors coach but leave you with nowhere to keep the results.

The category names tell you where each kind of tool points. Most "prompt management" products today are cloud SaaS with monthly pricing — they store, share and sometimes evaluate prompts on the vendor's servers. That's a legitimate job, especially for teams. But it means your prompts — often the most valuable working notes you have — sit in someone else's database behind a subscription that runs as long as you do.
